I accidentally snapped in half a pine tree’s cross section and saw a jellyfish in its shape. They unnerve me - partially because I experienced a bad sting as a kid - and so I paint through those feelings with each jellyfish tree print painting I create. This one is the latest in my favorite color - blue.

‘I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)’ are the poetic words of e.e. cummings, which inspired this piece because the center of a tree is called the ‘heartwood.’ Although in the case of this tree, its heartwood rotted away, so I painted it a new heart, from which Forget-Me-Not flowers bloom - a reminder that love can always bloom if we tend to it.

A Pine tree’s print became the Earth as watercolors formed continents, oceans, and the blooming flowers around its shape. I imagine a healthy planet as one where ecosystems bloom and grow in positive ways and hope that this painting will encourage us to take small, daily actions and advocate for policy changes to keep the Earth healthy.

Since bees and other pollinators are in danger due to pesticides and habitat loss, I created this tree print painting that’s a synthesis of a hive of bees pollinating a Cherry tree to create honey and a lightbulb to shine a light on this environmental issue. Tread Lightly invites viewers to grapple with how to leave a smaller ecological footprint on our planet. I printed a curving cross section of a fallen tree using acrylic paint, representing humanity’s damaging wave of impact on the Earth. But bright, watercolor flora growing in the rotted out center of the tree imply we can become better stewards of the planet, if we tread lightly upon it.
